Description

Where France ends and Italy begins, the Riviera keeps its most colorful secrets. This 6-day journey links Nice to the Italian border towns: lemon-scented Menton, medieval Dolceacqua, the markets of Ventimiglia and San Remo — two countries, one sea, and a way of life that ignores the frontier.

Highlights

Itinerary

Day 1 – Nice, gateway to the Riviera

Welcome to Nice. First contact with the Riviera through Vieux Nice: the Cours Saleya market, baroque churches and the castle hill panorama over the Baie des Anges.

Free evening to sample Niçois specialties — socca, pissaladière, petits farcis. Overnight in Nice.

Eastward along the coast: morning stop in Villefranche-sur-Mer, one of the Mediterranean’s deepest and most beautiful natural harbors, then the peninsula of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and the gardens of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.

Continue to Monaco for the afternoon: the old town, the Prince’s Palace and the Monte-Carlo casino square. Overnight in the Menton area.

A full day in Menton, the warmest town in France, famous for its lemons and its Italian-flavored old town. Guided walk from the Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange down to the seafront, then visit of the Jean Cocteau Museum collection.

Afternoon in the gardens that made Menton famous — Val Rahmeh botanical garden or the romantic Serre de la Madone. Overnight in Menton.

Crossing into Italy. First stop Ventimiglia and its famous Friday market, then the medieval village of Dolceacqua in the Nervia valley, with the arched bridge Claude Monet painted and narrow lanes leading up to the Doria castle.

Tasting of Rossese, the local red wine, in a village cellar before returning to the coast. Overnight in Menton.

The Italian Riviera at its most elegant: San Remo. Stroll along Corso Matteotti, the Russian Orthodox church, the belle époque casino and the old town of La Pigna climbing the hillside.

On the way back, stop in Bordighera, beloved by Monet and Queen Victoria, for a seafront passeggiata. Overnight in Menton.

Return towards Nice by the Grande Corniche, the panoramic road built by Napoleon on the trace of the Roman Via Julia Augusta. Stop at La Turbie and its Trophy of Augustus, overlooking Monaco from 480 m.

Last lunch with a view before transfer to Nice airport or station. Arrivederci — and à bientôt.
