Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Avignon
You arrive in Avignon, the City of Popes, where medieval ramparts and Gothic architecture instantly transport you to another era. After settling in, a guided walking tour takes you through the magnificent Palais des Papes, the iconic Pont Saint-Bénézet, and the charming Place de l’Horloge. In the evening, enjoy a welcoming dinner in a vaulted restaurant, savoring authentic Provençal specialties.
Day 2 – Luberon Villages: Lourmarin, Bonnieux & Saignon
Your first excursion takes you into the heart of the Luberon, a land of enchanting hilltop villages. In Lourmarin, explore its magnificent Renaissance château, once frequented by Albert Camus. Continue to Bonnieux, where cobbled streets wind their way up to a Romanesque church offering breathtaking panoramic views over vineyards and orchards. In the afternoon, discover Saignon, perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop overlooking fields of lavender, where life seems to unfold at the slow, timeless pace of the Middle Ages.
Day 3 – Les Baux-de-Provence & Tarascon
The day begins in Les Baux-de-Provence, spectacularly perched on a rocky plateau. Wander through its ruined citadel, medieval chapels, and artisan workshops, soaking up the atmosphere of this remarkable hilltop village. An optional visit to the Carrières de Lumières immerses you in a breathtaking artistic experience, with spectacular projections brought to life across the vast limestone walls of the former quarry.
In the afternoon, continue to Tarascon, where the formidable Château de Tarascon still stands proudly overlooking the Rhône—one of the best-preserved medieval castles in France. The evening is yours to enjoy at leisure in Arles.
Day 4 – Forcalquier & Sisteron
Heading north, the day begins in Forcalquier, a lively Provençal town where the famous Monday market fills the streets with stalls selling local cheeses, honey, fragrant herbs, and traditional Provençal crafts. Climb up to the citadel for breathtaking panoramic views across Haute-Provence.
In the afternoon, continue to Sisteron, the “Gateway to Provence,” dominated by its impressive citadel overlooking the Durance River. Wander through the town’s narrow streets, where the echoes of medieval battles still seem to linger, bringing the region’s rich history vividly to life.
Day 5 – Uzès & Duchy of Uzès Wine Tasting
Crossing into the Gard, discover Uzès, a charming town of elegant arcaded squares and magnificent Renaissance mansions. The Ducal Palace reflects the grandeur of one of France’s oldest duchies, offering a fascinating glimpse into the town’s aristocratic heritage.
After a leisurely lunch, visit a local vineyard for an exclusive introduction to the wines of the Duchy of Uzès—little-known gems that are gaining recognition for their distinctive character and quality. In the evening, settle in for a relaxing stay near Avignon.
Day 6 – Villeneuve-lès-Avignon & Departure
Your final day takes you to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, just across the Rhône from Avignon. Here, the imposing Fort Saint-André and the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction bear witness to the power of the medieval Church and the intrigues of the Papal court.
After a farewell lunch overlooking the Rhône, return to Avignon for your departure, taking with you unforgettable memories of majestic castles, hilltop villages, and a Provence where the spirit of the Middle Ages still lives on.
