Route

Day 1 – Arrival in Avignon

You arrive in Avignon, the City of Popes, where medieval ramparts and Gothic architecture immediately transport you to another era. After settling in, a guided walk takes you to the Palais des Papes, the Pont Saint-Bénézet and the charming Place de l'Horloge. In the evening, you will enjoy a welcome dinner in a vaulted restaurant serving Provençal specialities.

Your first excursion takes you to the heart of the Luberon, a land of hilltop villages. In Lourmarin, you explore its Renaissance castle, once frequented by Albert Camus. Continue on to Bonnieux, whose cobbled streets climb up to a Romanesque church offering panoramic views of vineyards and orchards. The afternoon continues in Saignon, perched on a rock overlooking lavender fields, where life seems to flow at a slow, medieval pace.

The day begins in Les Baux-de-Provence, spectacularly situated on a rocky plateau. You will stroll through the ruined citadel, medieval chapels and artisan workshops. Optional entry to the Carrières de Lumières immerses you in an artistic universe projected onto the limestone walls of the quarry. In the afternoon, the road leads to Tarascon, where the formidable Château de Tarascon still dominates the Rhône (one of the best-preserved medieval castles in France). Free evening in Arles.

Heading north, the day begins in Forcalquier, a lively town whose Monday market fills the streets with stalls selling cheese, honey, herbs and Provençal crafts. Climb up to the citadel to enjoy a panoramic view of Haute-Provence. The afternoon is spent in Sisteron, the "Gateway to Provence", dominated by its vast citadel and overlooking the Durance river. The narrow streets of the town still echo with the sounds of medieval battles.

As you cross the Gard region, you will discover Uzès, a town of arcaded squares and Renaissance mansions. The Ducal Palace recalls the grandeur of one of the oldest duchies in France. After a leisurely lunch, a visit to a local vineyard will introduce you to the little-known but remarkable wines of the Duchy of Uzès. Evening spent near Avignon.

Your last day is spent in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, on the other side of the Rhône from Avignon. Here, Fort Saint-André and the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction bear witness to monastic power and papal intrigues. After a farewell lunch overlooking the Rhône, you will return to Avignon for your departure, filled with memories of castles and villages where medieval Provence is still alive.
